The Toyota Camry has now been America's favorite car for a number of years. And while it's certainly not car enthusiasts' favorite car, it has good reasons to be the average family's. It's reliable. It's great to carry kids and groceries. When see a Camry taxi with over half a million kilometres or a college kid driving a dented, beat-up 1996 model of the car that didn't cost him much more than his smartphone, you know the Camry is built to sell well and last long. So for 2018, Toyota needed to keep the recipe simple and conservative.
Except they haven't really done that. The new car looks much more aggressive than its predecessor. It is edgier. Its looks might actually turn off some more old-school Camry buyers, which is something that's never happened before. We think the new model looks good in its sport 'XSE' trim. Our only gripe is the polarizing fake vent under the taillights and the huge grille on the regular trim levels, but it is a good thing that the some of the design is polarizing instead of boring. Beyond its bold new looks, Toyota has of course equipped its biggest draw with their safety suite of automatic braking systems and lane exit avoidance technology, as well as a sleuth of screens and displays across the redesigned passenger cabin. Strangely missing from the tech specs of the car is a mention of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility. Yes, Toyota is still stubbornly keeping those features off its cars for the time being, with no indication that they'll actually support these smartphone connectivity features at any point. As far as driving it goes, you can expect it to be as boring as its predecessors. This is a Toyota family car, after all. Under the hood, you'll find either a 2.5L 4 cylinder or a 3.6L V6. The 2.5 can be had with a hybrid option, so expect fuel economy to be outstanding on that front. No word on pricing or horsepower yet, but the car will be for sale in late summer.
